What The Data Shows
On paper, Austin looks better staffed than the rest of the state. Average RN hours per resident sit about 26% above the Texas average. If you stopped there, you'd assume Austin nursing homes are a safer bet across the board.
They are not. Nearly one in three Austin facilities, 8 of 25, score below 50 on our composite rating, and the gap between the best and worst facility in the city is enormous, a 78-point spread between The Arbour at Westminster Manor at 96.3 and Gracy Woods Nursing Center at 18.1. A healthy citywide average can hide a lot. Staffing alone does not tell you which building your family member ends up in. Gracy Woods Nursing Center sits at the opposite end, 18.1, and carries a CMS Special Focus Facility designation, a federal flag reserved for homes with a documented history of serious quality problems. State surveyors have found actual harm to residents across multiple inspections since 2017, most recently involving immediate jeopardy findings. Please do not consider this facility without visiting in person and asking hard questions first.
